College Football Power Ratings

What It Is

This is the page for my self-taught, self-run power ratings that I created in 2021 and have been improving ever since. Nothing's in here yet, but a simplified version of it will be implemented before the start of the 2025 season, and I hope to have the full version ready by the 2026 season. These ratings are similar to what you see from ESPN's SP+ and FPI ratings, and I my goal is for this to turn into a similar version of college basketball's kenpom.com, but for college football!

How It Works

Similar to the three rating systems I mentioned above, each team will have a rating based on my own formula that uses scores and stats posted from a team and their opponents throughout the year. I then use this rating to project future results using a calculation that predicts score, chance of winning and chance of covering the spread for each matchup. Although I don't currently use them to bet on games myself because of my job in the Iowa State Athletic Department, these projections can be used to create "best bets" every week or games where a team may have an advantage in terms of moneyline value or against the spread. Because the ratings don't take into account anything pre-season, it typically isn't very accurate until week four or five when we start to get enough data to make accurate predictions - so if you're using this to bet or just looking for accuracy in general, just be patient until around October every season.

To wrap up this spiel, this is purely a numbers game. Even though I used data to create the formula myself, there is never any human adjustment or bias element to these ratings. It's simply using past data to predict future games, and it's proven over the years to get more correct than incorrect. However, it will obviously never be 100 percent correct, as they're still unpredictable humans playing an unpredictable game. Anyways, enjoy perusing through, and go to the contact page if you have questions!
