Another year, another Georgia team that should contend for a national title under head coach Kirby Smart. Over the past four years, it’s hard to argue that Smart has possibly ascended to being the top coach in college football currently. With back-to-back national titles in ‘21 and ‘22, paired with four straight SEC title game appearances, the Dawgs have either built or are close to building a dynasty in Athens, and there’s nothing pointing to anything different in 2025. However, they did take a minor step last year compared to the few before that, but even in a “down” year, they still managed to win the SEC.

If Georgia doesn’t win a national title this year, that will likely fall on the offense for the most part. Quarterback Gunnar Stockton played decently in the limited action he got at the end of last year, but probably not good enough to get the Smart’s team where they want to go. An almost completely revamped offensive line may be cause for concern as well, although the fresh faces could improve the running game which struggled a lot last season. After leading the country in dropped passes a year ago, the receiving core should be one of the best in America in 2025 with the portal additions of Zachariah Branch and Noah Thomas.

The defense only returns three starters from a year ago, but have re-loaded with elite talent through development and the transfer portal. The linebacker unit is the strength of the defense on paper, led by stars CJ Allen and Raylen Wilson. The secondary probably poses the most questions of the three levels, but safety KJ Bolden is set to have a breakout year to lead the unit. Finding reliable edge rushers will be critical for the Bulldogs too this season.

This is probably the most question marks a Georgia team has had coming into the season in 5+ years. The national title potential is still there, but the floor is as low as it’s been since the beginning of Kirby Smart’s tenure, especially with the tough schedule. Though despite the young roster, I still think the Bulldogs make the SEC championship game and win a game or two in the playoff.
